   Nursing (Regulated):

Your work prospects are rated GOOD because:

The employment growth rate will likely be above average.
The increase in new job creation will likely continue because of ongoing trends--a growing and aging population that requires increased health services and increased government funding for health care.
You'll find increased employment opportunities in nursing homes

Nursing professions are regulated in Canada. In some provinces to use the title "nurse" you must be a registered member of one of the nursing regulatory bodies in that jurisdiction. Even a self-employed nurse has to do the same.

The provincial/territorial regulatory bodies are responsible for setting the standards for entry into the profession and issuing licenses to those who meet the required standards of qualifications and practice.

All candidates are required to successfully pass the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE), except in Quebec ; they have its own exam (Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec).

Nurses may be employed in hospitals and doctors' offices; in community health agencies, health centers, and clinics; in nursing homes and extended-care facilities; in rehabilitation centers and mental health centers; in schools, governments, businesses, and industries; and in private homes; they can even opt to be self-employed.

Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) or Licensed Practical Nurses (Lens) who want to work in the operating room require further academic training or on-the-job training.

  Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses

Nurses specialized in the area of psychiatric/mental health nursing will have separate provincial regulatory bodies to register in British Columbia , Alberta , Saskatchewan , and Manitoba . There may be a special interest group for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses within existing professional bodies. The Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nurses can also provide more information on the field of mental health nursing in Canada . The federation can be contacted at:
